Cars, or new ones, anyway, should be able to do one thing: move people from one place to another. If it can't do that, it's not a car, and I find it reasonable to expect my car to do it. Of course, I have the choice of riding around in a Geo Metro, or in a Porsche, but at their core, they do the same thing. Similarly, I believe that any rice cooker, not just a 150 dollar rice cooker, should produce well-cooked rice every time it's used. Common sense tells me that manufacturers test these things hundreds of times before putting them into production, and so by the time it's on my counter, it should be pretty much foolproof.

Reality doesn't agree with me, however. For four years, I've tried 6 or 7 different rice cookers with varied success. The type of rice that I make, sticky Japanese rice, is part of the problem. Most rice cookers in the United States are designed for long-grain, non-sticky rice, and so most US brands (e.g. Rival, Faberware, etc.) produce dry and/or unevenly cooked calrose rice. The only success I had in the past was an old Panasonic rice cooker, inherited from my father. Sadly, I damaged the bowl about a year ago, and it stopped working. After that, I tried making rice on the stove, but measuring out the water and rice to the same level every time frustrated me.

I had heard about fuzzy logic rice cookers a number of years ago, and, after working in an appliance store for a few months, I decided to buy one about two weeks ago. It works, and works well. Although I haven't tried out the timer function, and I'm a little wary to put any piece of my 0 rice cooker into the dishwasher, I give it my recommendation. If you need a general rice cooker that adapts well to any kind of rice you put in it and have 150 bucks to spare, invest in this product. There are a few other brands of fuzzy logic rice cookers out there, and I imagine that they all do the job and do it well. I've sold comparable products to my customers, and I've only heard praise for them. The Panasonic/National brand was the cheapest I could find, and it works just fine for me.

So, in short, If you're shopping for a new one, skip the Geo and get the Porsche; skip the cheap stuff, and put your money into something that does the job right.

This rice cooker cooks up to 5-1/2 cups (enough to feed five to ten people or more) of a variety of rices--white, sweet, porridge, and mixed--for accompanying stir-fries, stuffing peppers, or rolling sushi. The LCD screen is easy to read and the push-button controls are simple to program once you've mastered them. After loading your rice and water into the inner pan and choosing the type of rice you are making from the menu, the microcomputerized "Fuzzy logic" temperature control system calculates the exact cooking time (usually between 45 and 70 minutes) and programs it for you. The Fuzzy microchip combined with the unit's spherical heating system, which cooks on all sides of the inner pan, ensure perfect rice every time without burning or overcooking. You can also set the timer manually in 30-minute increments for cooking times of up to 13 hours. When cooking is complete, the cooker beeps eight times and automatically shifts into a Keep Warm mode, which keeps rice warm for up to 12 hours after cooking is complete. An Extended Keep Warm function warms rice for up to 8 hours at a lower temperature and reduces the chance of rice drying out or becoming discolored or odorous. If rice is still not eaten by then, there is another opportunity to give it a warmup of between 5 and 15 minutes using the Reheat key.

The inner pan has a nonstick coating for easy cleaning and the lid's stainless-steel underside also wipes clean much effort. The rice cooker has a plastic handle for transporting it from cabinet to counter and a retractable cord for easy storage. As an adolescent appetite arrived in our house, we took the advice of an acquaintence, and arranged for a rice cooker to arrive in our house. This thing takes all the drudgery out of making real rice (as opposed to instant or any other precooked rice). The timer is an excellent feature, as you can start the rice before sunrise, and not be distracted as you cook everything else, and have the rice arrive at the table with everything else at sunset. Cleaning is simple; take out the inside bowl and sponge off, wipe down the inside of the cooker.

Although we are an American family of northern European descent, we've found rice is the 'easy button' for dealing with teenager who seems to require tera-calorie meals. And the Zojirushi rice cooker is the way to go.

After five years of dealing with a cheap rice cooker that left 20% of the rice burnt and stuck on the bottom, which made it hell to clean, I splurged on getting this Sanyo unit. I've made both white rice and brown rice with it. 99% of the rice is cooked perfectly. The non-stick bowl makes it a breeze to clean. And I like the "13 minute warning" feature: the rice cooker lets you know when it is 13 minutes from completion, and it counts down the minutes.

Apparently this little machine also bakes bread. However it is NOT a bread maker. You have to prepare the dough separately and then the Sanyo bakes it. This is probably practical for those who don't mind kneading dough, or buy frozen dough, and want small loaves of bread. I have not test the bread baking feature.

Bottom line: you get what you pay for. This rice cooker really rocks.

Ok- its a rice cooker. And a rice warmer. And supposedly a cake maker and slow cooker and food warmer too. And a veggie steamer.
All I know is that this thing cooks rice like nobody's business. It does what it says its going to do...and it does it remarkably well.

I have had this product for a little over two months now and have used it approximately 10 times. To cook rice. It makes the rice perfectly, not sticky or soupy or burt or any other variation other than perfectly done. The instructions were a little odd to figure out and took some rereading to get them right. The on-board timer and cooking computer input display thingy work well and are good at helping you know when rice is done and everything is ready to go.

I haven't used it as a cake maker (although a recipe is included) nor have I used it as a slow cooker or anything like that. I selected this product for its main purpose. I wanted to cook rice and have it ready to go when the stir fry was just getting finished. It takes about 40 mins from start to finish for a 6 cup batch. (cooked).

The measuring cup isnt an english "cup" of measure but somewhere a little bit smaller. So be sure to hang on to it as it is what the manufacturer uses at its standard measure. The non stick inside pot is a snap to clean and all the parts and pieces that need to come apart do- and go back together easily as well.

I have to give this a 5 star review because it does what is was intended to do. I have no issues with it and am glad that it is in my home. We eat a fairly large amount of rice and it has been a wonderful appliance to use for that purpose. But if I want to make a cake, I have an oven- if I want to use a slow cooker, I have a crock pot. For rice...I now have this wonderful thing...and I love it!

We chose this rice cooker for several reasons. The reviews of this product and its differently colored brother products were excellent. The comparable Zojiruishi cookers were good as well but slightly more expensive. Cooking rice in this is a breeze - a must have for busy families on the go. My favorite option is the 24 hour timer - I can set it in the morning to have perfect rice waiting for my dinner when I get home from work and don't feel like cooking. And the rice? Comes out perfect every time!!! Not a single burnt or stuck to the pot grain so far. Just follow the instructions and that's it! Though it is just the husband and myself we got the 5.5 cup cooker because we will use if for dinner parties and future children. And it is plenty enough for that - I would not recommend a bigger size unless you are running a restaurant! Most days I put 1 cup dry rice in for the two of us and it is perfect, if not a little too much for us. The separate pot and inner lid for slow cooking is an excellent idea. Our kitchen is all black/stainless steel and this was the closest rice cooker to that theme that had great reviews. This is an excellent appliance and well worth the money!

Even if you don't think you need it, get it. It will change your life.

First, 10 cups do not refer to 10 amercian cups, they are 10 Japanese cups, so this is really only 7.5 American cups.

Second, no matter how much rice you think you can eat, you will eat more once you have this machine. This size rice cooker is not too big for you. I make enough to eat at dinner and then leftovers for either rice pudding, rice salad, or fried rice.

This makes perfect rice every time. Even the brown rice is tasty and has an appealing texture.

If you can't cook, you will really appreciate this machine. If you can cook, you will still appreciate it. No more wondering what side dish you will make with dinner. You can cook the rice earlier in the day and it will hold it at the ideal temperature.

This is extremely easy to use and has very consistent results. I cannot imagine needing the more expensive model as I cannot envision tastier rice.

One caveat-- I recommend getting The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook by Beth Hensperger when you get your machine. She will tell you how to cook all sorts of grains in there and provides tasty recipes so you can make the most of your new appliance. It is a great rice cooker, though on expensive side. But for a Bengali family from India it really works nicely for any kind of rice. We are very happy.
